TOM MONTAG
WHERE THE SKY
lets down, that
closing. Where
the water
falls off and
the dark earth
shudders. Where
the small bird
lands, let us
cup our hands
and hold it.
THE EVENING
The evening fails
as it always does:
the light, I mean,
the way it takes
the trees. The way
the stars come out,
reminding us:
in the small heart
of this shelter
we find a home.
Tom Montag is most recently the author of In This Place: Selected Poems 1982-2013.
